The Hornbeam Line was a fortified installation of barbed wire and manned defensive postions that stretched northwards for more than 20 miles from the coast. The installation was achieved by SAF with support from Royal Engineers and its impact was to limit enemy movement and supplies from the west. The manned locations were reguarly shelled or mortared in its early days, and patrols inspected the wire for breaches and in searches for or ambush of ‘adoo’ movement. This photograph which is taken from ‘Reef’ show the line with ‘Killi’, ‘ Ashawq’ and further towards the coast at Mugsayl. ‘Spur’, in later photograph is just left of centre of photograph on ridgeline.
