Sappers still crowded around the kitchen. The 1965 “Manual of Army Health” suggests that soldiers involved in heavy work in hot climates should have an input of 4,500 calories a day. The obvious loss of weight of the sappers does suggest that they were burning up more calories than they were consuming. This was probably noted but not acted upon.
